GIRL AMERICA (Amerikánka), directed by Viktor Tauš, is a Czech fantasy drama that follows the journey of a young orphan raised in communist Czechoslovakia. The film explores themes of intergenerational trauma and social dysfunction, blending surreal imagery with the stark realities of growing up in an oppressive regime. The story revolves around a forsaken girl, dubbed Girl America, who navigates her harsh upbringing and strives for redemption, showcasing the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

The film earned critical acclaim, including multiple Czech Lion awards for Best Cinematography, Best Set Design, and Best Costumes. Girl America also received the Czech Film Critics’ Award for Best Film and the Audiovisual Achievement Award for production and costume design by Jan Kadlec. With its poignant narrative and striking visual style, it captures the emotional odyssey of a girl who, despite her struggles, seeks authentic happiness beyond fairy-tale endings, offering a powerful meditation on hope, transformation, and the human capacity to endure.
