Marta is a romantic. At school she’s cast as a loser. She shares a room with her sister, Kasia, and her grandma who tells her granddaughters stories about the Warsaw Uprising. Her parents, Tadek and Elżbieta, live in an adjacent room. Her father is an intellectual, constantly humiliated by the system and secretly envious of his wealthy brother-in-law. Her mother is the “Solidarity” trade union leader at her workplace who dreams of freedom and of leaving Poland. The family’s true emotions surface when a tiny orange Fiat 126p parks in front of their apartment building.
