The Word (Slovo)

Set between the summers of 1968 and 1969, THE WORD is a vivid portrait of the family of Václav Vojíř (Martin Finger), a respected notary and small-town authority, and his self-sacrificing spouse Věra (Gabriela Mikulková). Director Beata Parkanová based the two lead characters on the lives of her grandparents as she set out to create a world in which these two moral figures refuse to bow down to the communist-era politics of their day. While husband and wife are quite dissimilar from one another, they share a serene, pure form of love alongside tenderness, affability, and admirable ethical principles. THE WORD is an intimate drama that focuses on the power of the given word.
The film screened at the prestigious Karlovy Vary International Film Festival where it won two awards for Best Director and Best Actor and was nominated for Best Film.
