Belfast
Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Kenneth Branagh (Henry V, Hamlet), Belfast is a poignant story of love, laughter, and loss in one boy’s childhood, amid the music and social tumult of the late 1960s. It tells the story of Buddy, a happy-go-lucky young boy who loves spending time with his grandfather in his workshop, watching Star Trek with his older brother, and playing outside with his school friends. As the Troubles begin to poison his once-picturesque neighborhood, Buddy watches the world around him change drastically as his father (Jamie Dornan), mother (Caitriona Balfe), and grandparents (Judi Dench and Ciarán Hinds) begin to wrestle with the possibility that their close-knit family will be forced to flee Belfast—the only place Buddy has ever called home. Winner of the Audience Award at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. –Jacob Burns Center
